PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITION:

As our Promotional and Packaging Copywriter, you’ll craft hard-hitting, high-impact content that moves products off shelves and into the hands of serious doers and tradespeople. You’ll write and refine promotional, packaging, and product copy that’s as tough as the tools and equipment we sell—clear, compelling, and always on brand. Whether it’s print, digital, or video, your words will help drive performance, elevate the brand, and connect with customers who know the difference between good and great tools.
RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Conceptualizes and writes promotional direct sales and offer-driven copy, as well as special features and product brands that are on-brand and aligned with Creative and Marketing guidelines, while meeting strategic project goals.
- Reviews all items submitted to Northern Tool’s product inventory management system. Writes new web copy and updates product details through research and coordination with the Merchandising team. Gathers, verifies and updates information to resolve any gaps or inaccuracies. Additionally, reviews the daily new item report and ensures items are updated.
- Partners with packaging Creative, Marketing and Merchandising teams from concept through print to develop, write and edit product packaging copy for private label initiatives as needed.
- Writes, revises and maintains all catalog copy, including creating and updating charts, while adhering to Northern Tool’s CMS-based style guide and catalog formats. Collaborates with external creative partner to resolve production issues, including copy updates and change requests.
- Writes and maintains all retail and retail sign copy, ensuring alignment with project specifications, new requests and in-house standards and guidelines.
- Communicates with Merchandising to research and verify all product information as needed, incorporating new and updated copy to keep product item information accurate and up to date.
- Coordinates and provides copy changes and product-specific updates to the proofreader. Serves as a designated backup proofreader, offering support as needed—including coverage during absences or periods of increased workload.
- Takes on nonroutine promotional writing, copy editing or content update projects, adjusting to fit project needs.
- Manages assigned day-to-day copywriting responsibilities using a project management tool to track progress, communicate updates and meet deadlines. Prioritizes assignments and produces approved copy by the project deadline.
- Keeps supervisor informed of important developments, potential problems and related information necessary for effective management. Coordinates and communicates plans and activities with others, as appropriate to ensure a coordinated work effort and team approach.
QUALIFICATIONS:

- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in journalism, advertising or other related field.
- At least 3–4 years of related work experience, including writing for retail stores, digital channels (website, display ads and social media).
- Must demonstrate a high degree of skill in grammar, punctuation, spelling and motivational language.
- Good organizational and planning skills.
- Familiar with journalism and advertising principles.
- Knowledge of computer software, including Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with a wide variety of customers, Company personnel and others.
- Demonstrates Northern Tool + Equipment’s 12 Core Competencies.
